Royal Academy of Dance

The Royal Academy of Dance was born at the Trocadero Restaurant in Piccadilly, London in 1920 on the 31st December, by a small group of eminent dance professionals. Brought together by Philip Richardson, Editor of the British magazine Dancing Times, the Group included five great European dancers: Adeline Genée, Tamara Karsavina, Lucia Cormani, Edouard Espinosa, and Phyllis Bedells. Between them they represented the principal dance training methods of the time – Genée the Danish school, Karsavina the Russian school, Cormani the Italian school, Espinosa the French school, and Bedells the English school. Their concern was for the poor quality and badly organised state of dance training in Britain. If standards of ballet were to improve, they decided, something had to be done about the way it was taught. There and then they formed themselves into the Association of Teachers of Operatic Dancing – the organisation that was to become the Royal Academy of Dance. Over the next decade, the Association grew in size and influence, and in 1936 at the last Privy Council Meeting of King George V, the Association was granted a Royal Charter and became the Royal Academy of Dancing, the youngest of five Royal Academies. In 1997 The Benesh Institute, the custodian of Benesh Movement Notation, was amalgamated with the Royal Academy of Dancing. In 2001 the Academy’s title was changed to Royal Academy of Dance.

Today, the Royal Academy of Dance is the world’s largest and most influential upholder of classical ballet standards. Its’ influence has spread to over 80 countries, with over 17,000 members, nearly 6,000 registered teachers, 1,200 students in full-time or part-time training, and 185,000 students undertaking examinations in classical ballet. Through its core activities, the Academy helps and encourages its’ teachers to improve their teaching skills, to pass on that knowledge to their students, support its’ members and provides information and guidance to parents on classical ballet education. The Academy’s links with the University of Surrey, through its validated teacher education programmes, have gone from strength to strength. This, together with The Benesh Institute provides the widest spread of classical ballet and notation education to students of dance.

The Royal Academy of Dance is an international teacher, education and awarding body for classical ballet. It was established in 1920 with the aim of developing and maintaining the highest possible standard of teaching. This remains its objective today.

Teachers following the Royal Academy of Dance system encourage students to achieve their personal best in the understanding, appreciation and performance of classical ballet. Whatever age or stage they may have reached, students who study with a Royal Academy of Dance trained teacher can be confident that they are receiving a comprehensive, well-structured and relevant education in Classical Ballet. They can be sure that they will be taught according to safe teaching principles and that they will be evaluated through progressively built graded examinations.

EXAMINATIONS IN CLASSICAL BALLET

Examinations offer students an opportunity to show their understanding of the work. They are open to all students studying the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus and are tests of knowledge at specific levels. Students must meet the criteria set down for each level to enable to confidently proceed to the next level.

Successful candidates will be awarded one of four classifications based on the performance seen on the day. The marks awarded by the Examiner will indicate to students, teachers and parents, the strengths of the candidate’s performance and the areas which require improvement.

The Royal Academy of Dance provides three syllabi in Classical Ballet: two examination syllabi, and one non-assessed syllabus. The two examination syllabi are known as Graded Examinations in Dance and Vocational Graded Examination in Dance.

Syllabus content is structured progressively to ensure that the level of technical expertise required is within the grasp of the student. A balanced, carefully planned programme of study is provided by teachers who have a sound understanding of the principles of movement and fundamentals of Classical Ballet. Classes offered are enthusiastically and sympathetically taught with the student’s needs as a central basis.

There are nine grades of examination numbered progressively in order of complexity, from Primary to Grade 8 Award.

Founded in 1920, the Royal Academy of Dance is one of the worlds most awarded and influential dance education. Recognised for its professional membership organisation and setting global standards for exams in classical ballet. More than a quarter of a million students are examined each year worldwide. From Pre-primary to Grade 8 and vocational levels,Total 16 levels.
