Tap dance

Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. Tap dance has roots in dancing such as Irish dancing, English Lancashire Clog dancing, and Juba Dance. It is a liberal dance style that does not comprise many limitations, and the focus is much more on the complex rhythmic use of the feet than movements of the upper body. Tempo varies according to the accompanying music. The various percussive sounds and graceful movements are what make tap dance uniquely humorous and charming. Tap dance emerged from Broadway during the early 20th century, and has its roots in African American and Irish dance cultures. Through its many years of development, tap dance has absorbed elements of Jazz music and improvisation techniques, giving it a challenging yet still light-hearted, cheerful vibe.

Key figures in the history of tap dance include William Henry Lane, who was one of the few black performers to join an otherwise white minstrel troupe, and is widely considered to be one of the most famous forebears of tap dance. Three famous figures after Lane include King Rastus Brown, who developed flat footed dance techniques; Bill Robinson, who emphasised use of the toe; and John Bubbles, who created the Cramproll, which involves simultaneous use of the heel and the toe.

Tap dance is said to be a dance to be listened to. It is even said that a great tap dancer is mostly a musician. In the early days of tap dance competitions, judges did not actually watch the dance, but instead listened to the rhythms that the dancers created from underneath the stage. The most important aspect of tap dance is whether the rhythms are clear – no matter how fast the rhythm, how complex the routine, how soft certain sounds are, a skilled tap dancer would ensure that they are heard as clearly as possible.

Over a century of growth, tap dance has divided into two major streams – Irish and American. One variation with the longest history is the American variation known as “hoofing” where performers danced primarily “closer to the floor”, using mostly footwork and not showing very much arm or body movement. This kind of tap dancing, also called rhythm tap, was employed by slaves in America. Because the slaves were generally not allowed to practice their own culture and customs, they mixed their form of dancing with Irish step dance to create tap dances that could be concealed from slave owners and over-seers.[citation needed] This is the origin of tap and what later evolved into (what most people know as tap now) “show tap” because it uses more arm movement. This form evolved because show tap was thought to be more exciting to watch and became famous when show tap was put on Broadway.。
